Families and Neighborhoods

Learning Goals: The students will be able to recognize the people in their surroundings.

Day 1

2.66 Children are provided opportunities and materials to explore social roles in the family and workplace through play.

2.69 Children are provided varied opportunities and materials to learn about physical characteristics of their local environment as a foundation for learning geography.


State Standards:

Develop and Expand Awareness of Concepts of Print

    1. Demonstrate an understanding that symbols represent objects, events or people.

    2. Recognize environmental print including logos and signs.


Objective: The class will be able to draw their neighborhoods after reviewing their street with their parents, previously.


Materials: Book: Families, by Ann Morris



Paint Brushes



Adaptations to Differentiate Instruction: The class can create their neighborhood at home with their family if they would like to since they would be able to actually see the neighborhood that they will be drawing.


Procedure: "My Neighborhood"


  1. The class will sit together and discuss the different things they know about their neighborhoods after reading Families.

  2. The students will be given paper, paint, and brushes to design the layout of what their house looks like.

  3. The students will then continue to paint by adding other houses and buildings to create their neighborhood.

  4. The class will discuss where we all live, whether in a house or an apartment.
