Point Park University hosted the Steel City Showdown — the first major esports tournament in Pittsburgh history — May 11-12 at its Pittsburgh Playhouse with more than 500 participants and spectators.

As part of their practicum course, four Point Park University students gained professional experience providing communications services to the City of Pittsburgh for the annual Inclusive Innovation Summit March 28-30. Known as the Point Park Street Team, the students roles included public relations manager, media liaison and videographer and editor.
"I am lucky enough to have been part of the first wave of esports talent. I am one of the few who has a degree in broadcasting and real experience in a TV studio ... I hope that more Point Park students can make their mark across the industry," said alumnus Ryan Bailey, esports specialist/commentator for Skillshot Media.

Broadcast reporting major Monae Findley is Miss Black Pennsylvania USA 2019. The Miss Black USA Organization is the first and oldest scholarship pageant for women of color, awarding over $500,000 in scholarships.
Since graduating from Point Park in 2016, Brittany Lauffer has worked as a multimedia journalist for Erie News Now, and is currently the deputy director of communications for the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.

"I had interviews with eight teams and received an offer from the Omaha Storm Chasers and Perfect Game USA. One of, if not, the most rewarding experiences was establishing connections at the meetings," said Allison Schubert.
"The classes I took required that I go out and shoot and write stories on tight deadlines - sometimes solo, sometimes in a team - which is the exact skill you need when you take your first job," said Sasso.

"I chose Point Park for several reasons - I really liked the location in Downtown Pittsburgh, class sizes are small and I wanted the one-on-one experience with my professors, the broadcast program is top notch and I was lucky enough to receive scholarships.
