Literary Arts Instructor's Work Selected For 2017 Public Poetry Project Friday, September 15, 2017
Fred Shaw, Pittsburgh poet and part-time instructor for the Department of Literary Arts at Point Park University, recently had his poem "Scraping Away" selected for publication by the 2017 Public Poetry Project of the Pennsylvania Center for the Book.
"Scraping Away" is from his collection, Argot, which features poems inspired by his years of working in the restaurant industry as well as his teenage years and family relationships.
Shaw teaches writing and literature classes at Point Park and Carlow University, writes book reviews for the Pittsburgh City Paper and has maintained a career in the restaurant industry for more than 25 years.
His former Point Park student Alexa Kennedy said: "Intro to Prose with Fred Shaw has been my favorite course. The material and advice he gave during class has redirected not only my career path, but my habits as a student and person. A professor who causes you to question more than the writing prompt is invaluable.
