"The classes I took required that I go out and shoot and write stories on tight deadlines - sometimes solo, sometimes in a team - which is the exact skill you need when you take your first job."
What factors led you to pursue your undergraduate degree at Point Park?
I chose Point Park based on its facilities and emphasis on broadcasting as a major. It was simply a bonus the campus was located in beautiful and active Downtown Pittsburgh. I made memories and friendships there that will last forever.
In what ways did your Point Park experience prepare you for the real world?
The classes I took required that I go out and shoot and write stories on tight deadlines - sometimes solo, sometimes in a team - which is the exact skill you need when you take your first job.
Tell us about your current position at WTAE-TV.
It's an early wake-up call! I get in at 3:30 a.m. to make my maps and get my first traffic report ready for 5 a.m. I give traffic and breaking news updates during our morning show until 7 a.m., and in each of the Good Morning America cut-ins. I take the next two hours to work on any stories I have coming down the pipes, then I get ready for the noon show which I anchor.
What do you enjoy most about your job and why?
I love the role of local news in a community. It serves as a crux - a central place people can go to learn about the happenings, events and inspirational stories of those around them. I also find myself really gravitating toward the "get ready" mentality of morning news. I find it very fulfilling to help people walk out the door in the morning feeling like they know what's important that day.
What advice do you have for a student interested in pursuing a similar degree at Point Park?
Take advantage of all of the opportunities the University offers! Get involved in extracurricular activities, complete as many internships as you can and watch closely to see what your peers are doing. Your experience at Point Park will be what you make it. The great news is, if you're looking, you'll find opportunity to soar!
